Not sure about you but I'm FOREVER banging on about how I'd love to be a better sewer, better at crafting and be able to dream up, then make my own clothes. I think the desire to be a domestic goddess and sewing machine genius has a lot to do with Tilly from Tilly and the Buttons. I blame her inspiring blog - she makes sewing look so accessible to even the most inexperienced of crafters.
The folks at Simplicity caught wind of my pining for crafty skills and sent me a copy of this incredible book - more like a fact file - on an absolute beginners guide to sewing patterns. It's the perfect introductory to understanding patterns (and predominantly how to choose patterns so you don't walk out of the house looking less like Sienna Miller and more like Hyacinth Bucket), how to find the perfect fit for your figure, as well as beginners info on the crazy jargon draped across all the pattern packs.
There's even a beginners guide to all the tools you'll need for dress making depending on how brave you are and best of all, none of the advice given in the book mentions a word of different brands - readers can rest assured there's no affiliates involved, just 100% honest tips.
I particularly love the way the whole book is laid out. There are easy to reference tabs sectioning off key parts of dress making, along with clear tables for finding exact measurements you need to cut material depending on UK sizes (for men and children too!) It looks so cute on my bookshelf too, definitely one to keep and whip out for reference when I'm old, grey and an expert at sewing ;)
I've got a long road of learning ahead, my first stop will be to learn how to make cushion covers and go from there - baby steps! I'm also on the lookout for a reasonably priced sewing class in Brighton so if you know of anywhere, tell me asap! I've seen a few I'm desperate to check out.
Anyway. Simplicity have been so generous, sending me a second copy of this book (RRP £20) to give away to one of my wannabe seamstress readers! So if you fancy yourself one of these to kick start your sewing shenanigans or know somebody who would love this, enter below!
Open to UK entrants only. The winner will be announced in just 2 weeks time (12pm on the 14th July 2014) so hurry!
