Move aside "hygge", the swedish term "hemmablind" is the one to know
I found myself flicking through the pages of Issue Twenty-One of Kinfolk magazine when I came across this new term I hadn't heard of before.
Hemmablind.
The direct translation is: "blind to flaws of the home".
It's that feeling where you run the same routine day in day out, you walk the same rug, you serve from the same plates, you stare at the same furniture so long that you cease to see it for what it is anymore.
Like "hygge" – the word has really stuck with me.
It got me asking questions like;
Do I experience 'hemmablind' every day without realising it?
Are there small things I can change to prevent it?
What ways can I breathe new life back into the belongings I've had for many many years?
How can I gain a new lease for life on the things I don't love so much anymore?
Are there things I can do to be more appreciative and mindful of how wonderful the cherished things I own are?
So I've challenged myself, and I invite you to challenge yourself too.
Next time I'm pottering around the house doing something mundane like folding clothes or washing the dishes, I will think about ways I can shake up my home routine. The things I'll think about are giving my belongings new homes, pulling out the stuff that's hiding in my drawers waiting to be displayed and put them somewhere new. And rotate images inside photo frames as often as I can – maybe even frame pictures in line with the seasons.
Join me too. I'm hoping it will give me some focus whilst our 1930s house renovation ticks on through.
Thanks for reading,
Fiona
